I had noticed the coolant overflow bottle was dropping, and there was wiff of coolant from time-to-time. Some poking around revealed the slow coolant leak to be a weeping water pump. A fresh water pump and radiator hoses were on the project list anyway, so they just got bumped up to the top.

Because Caterpillar used this Mitsubishi diesel engine in a number of small skid steers and excavators, the easiest way to get a new water pump was to order one for a “Caterpillar E306" and have it sent my way from a seller in California. Finding new radiator hoses took a bit more research, but I’ve got a new OEM set coming my way to me from the UAE. The parts sellers in the UK that have them wanted a lot more for  shipping than the guy in the UAE.

The front skid plates being off provides the ideal opportunity to put some fresh gear oil in the front differential. I was happy to see some very clean oil come out of it. Later this afternoon I’ll venture out and get some new copper crush washers for the drain and fill plugs and some fresh synthetic gear oil.

I consider this kind of thing an expected part of putting a very low mileage, but still 25 year old, truck back into regular use. Based of my shakedown of it so far, it should be adventure ready after the cooling system refresh. There are certainly other things on the to do list, but none of them urgent or reliability concerns.

It’s obvious you’re having the time of your life. Keep the updates coming.

I get a kick out this truck, and I actually find the scarcity of it being something that never existed on this content interesting. If it were an only car that I was relying on as a daily driver I might feel different about that last part, but as a for-fun adventure mobile I don’t mind things like tracking down a new set of radiator hoses on the other side of the world.

Hhmmm, our P ajero has also developed a slight coolant leak. I haven’t really had a chance to look in t o it yet. Good to know about the Caterpillar connection!

I don’t know about your engine, but on the 4M40 it seems the most common leaks are the water pump and sometimes the orings on the aluminium tube that runs from the thermostat around the to back of the engine. I was glad that wasn’t my leak, as replacing those calls for removing the turbo to get access.

I’ve been pretty careful with mine not going to far afield and keeping close watch on the temperature until I found the leak, as the one real weakness of the 2.8 is that like most aluminum head engines, they can be overheated exactly one time. That one time has a decent chance at cracking the head.

This is so cool... I have an 85 Jeep xj with the Renault Turbo Diesel in it. I am still in the process of deciding whether to swap in a 4d56t(like I put in my Mazda B2600i 4x4, or the engine in your Pajero when that Renault dies...
